And The Mountains Echoed | Book Review

Hi! This will be Book-Bosomed first ever book review. As a disclaimer, English written books will be reviewed in English, while Indonesian books in Bahasa. I'll try my best keeping out any spoiler.

So yeah, I just finished reading And The Mountains Echoed this morning. I know I'm really late, but I finally done reading all three of Hosseini's books. Started with The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and at last And The Mountains Echoed. Let's just talk about the latter one.

I LOVE Hosseini's since The Kite Runner. I wish I read them sooner. The flow of his writing, the engagement, the historical background, the effect it has on me after reading it... I'm out of words. However, to be honest, out of all three books, And The Mountains Echoed is my least favorite. But still, it's one of my favorites of the year. So I guess it says a lot about my love for the author.

The book starts with Abdullah, Saboor, and Pari story in Shadbagh, Afganistan (which apparently a fictional village). Each chapter tells a different story in different part of the world and even in different time frame with only a snippet of connection in between those chapters (some are deeply connected, some are not). This what makes this book different from the other two. It has a lot of characters with diverse yet touching story. I like all of them, although I thought some are not necessarily do anything to the main story. For example the Markos and Thalia story. Or the Bashiri cousins (tho I was touched by the irony of their story). A lot of it has an open end which might left us unsatisfied. I wish each of the story has its own book so I could get deeper into their stories. I'd definitely read all of them. No doubt.

If you never read any Khaled Hosseini's works, don't start with this one. Start with either The Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns. Again, it is NOT because And The Mountains Echoed doesn't worth your time. It's just that it's better for you to completely in love with his writing before you read this one because it's quite dragging compared to the other two. But still, bear in mind, Khaled Hosseini is so good that my least favorite of his books is still very much an enjoyable read. Can't wait for his 4th one!
